Residential Interior Design

Homes Designed
to Last

Full-service residential interior design — from single-room renovations to whole-home commissions and custom new construction.

A home is a composition, not a collection of rooms.

The most successful residential projects are designed as wholes — where every room earns its place in the sequence, and where the spatial logic of arrival through the home creates the emotional register of each space.

Harmony House takes on residential commissions at every scale: a single bathroom that needs to be finally right, a whole-home renovation that requires a unified design language, or a custom new construction project designed from the first floor plan through the final installation.

Six Principles for Residential Design

01
Space Planning Before Aesthetics
The most common mistake in residential design is beginning with materials before the spatial strategy is resolved. Space planning first, then material, then furnishing — the sequence matters.
02
Whole-Home vs. Room-by-Room
A whole-home project requires a through-line — a material palette, hardware finish, and spatial logic that connects every room. A room-by-room project requires understanding the relationship to what it adjoins.
03
Material Palette: Cohesion Over Variety
A home with too many materials reads as unsettled regardless of the quality of individual choices. Five to seven materials, held consistently, create the sense of a home designed as a whole.
04
Lighting: The Most Underinvested Element
Every room needs at least two light sources. Dimmers on every circuit. Warm white throughout. The investment is modest relative to project cost and enormous relative to daily impact.
05
The Wet Rooms: Where Craft Is Most Exposed
Bathrooms and kitchens require technical documentation — tile layout drawings, millwork elevations, plumbing coordination — that exceeds other rooms. These decisions are the most permanent in the house.
06
Full-Service Design and Construction Protection
Clients who hand a design to a contractor without ongoing involvement almost always receive a built result that has drifted from what they approved. Construction administration is quality control.
A whole-home commission is less like a project and more like a long conversation — where every room earns its place in the sequence.

A whole-home commission taught us that every room earns its place in a sequence — beginning at the entry and resolving, finally, at the grand piano.
