Keene Japanese-Inspired Bath

The Keene bath draws inspiration from the quiet ritual of traditional Japanese bathing. In Japanese homes, bathing is not simply functional—it is a moment of restoration and reflection at the end of the day.

Harmony House designed the space around this philosophy, creating an environment where the experience of bathing becomes slow, intentional, and restorative.

Natural materials, soft lighting, and simple architectural forms work together to create a calming environment that encourages pause.

01

The Bathing Ritual

The design follows the traditional Japanese sequence of bathing.

First, cleansing takes place in the walk-in shower area. Only after washing does the bather enter the ofuro soaking tub, which is designed purely for relaxation.

The deep soaking tub allows the body to be fully immersed while seated upright, creating a more comfortable and meditative experience than a traditional Western bathtub.

By organizing the room around this sequence, the bathroom becomes a space designed for quiet daily ritual.

02

Materials & Atmosphere

The material palette focuses on calm, natural textures.

Large-format tile creates a continuous visual surface that allows the space to feel expansive and uncluttered. Warm wood tones soften the stone surfaces, while subtle lighting highlights texture and architectural detail.

Built-in niches provide discreet storage for bath accessories, candles, and daily essentials while maintaining a minimal visual field.

The result is a space that feels quiet, grounded, and restorative.

03

Spatial Planning

Harmony House approached the design with careful attention to proportion and flow.

The layout was reconfigured to improve circulation while giving the soaking tub a clear focal position within the room. Shower and bathing zones are separated but visually connected, reinforcing the rhythm of the bathing ritual.

Thoughtful lighting placement ensures the room can shift from functional brightness to a softer, more relaxed atmosphere in the evening.

04

A Modern Interpretation of Japanese Bathing

When completed in Summer 2026, the Keene Japanese-Inspired Bath will offer a contemporary interpretation of traditional bathing culture—blending timeless design principles with the needs of modern living.

The space is designed to function as a private sanctuary within the home, where architecture, materials, and light support moments of calm and renewal.
